Fossil Free: Microbe Helps Convert Solar Power to Liquid Fuel

A new "bioreactor" could store electricity as liquid fuel with the help of a genetically engineered microbe and copious carbon dioxide. The idea?dubbed "electrofuels" by a federal agency funding the research?could offer electricity storage that would have the energy density of fuels such as gasoline. If it works, the hybrid bioelectric system would also offer a more efficient way of turning sunlight to fuel than growing plants and converting them into biofuel.

"The method provides a way to store electrical energy in a form that can be readily used as a transportation fuel," chemical engineer James Liao of the University of California, Los Angeles, explains. Liao and his colleagues report on their "integrated electro-microbial bioreactor" in Science on March 30.

To convert electricity into liquid fuel, Liao and his colleagues focused on Ralstonia eutropha, a soil microbe that can use hydrogen as an energy source to build CO2 into more microbial growth. Already, the microbe's biological machinery is being harnessed for industrial purposes?for example, to churn out plastic instead of proteins. By tweaking the industrial microorganism's genetics, the team now has coaxed it to churn out various butanols?a liquid fuel. "If one speaks with combustion engineers, then they will tell you that the simplest real fuel is butanol," says chemist Andrew Bocarsly of Princeton University, who is not involved in the electrofuel project.

Liao's bioreactor gets its electricity from a solar panel. The current flows into an electrode in the bioreactor, which is full of water, CO2 and R. eutropha. The electricity starts a chemical reaction that uses the CO2 to make formate?carbon dioxide with a hydrogen atom attached, which is an ion (electrically charged) that substitutes for insoluble hydrogen as an energy source for the microbe. The genetically engineered R. eutropha then consumes the formate, yielding butanols, plus more CO2 as a waste product?the latter of which is recycled back through the biochemical process.

R. eutropha doesn't particularly like to be shocked, however, so Liao's team built a "porous ceramic cup" to shield the microbe from the electrical current. Powered by its photovoltaic panel, the bioreactor produced 140 milligrams per liter of butanol fuel over 80 hours, although it then stopped working. "In principle, we can use the same approach to produce other kinds of fuels or chemicals," Liao says.

The approach combines the appeal of energy-dense liquid fuels?packing 50-times or more the energy per kilogram of even the best batteries?with the potential to produce more fuel in a limited area than plants. Photosynthesis achieves the same thing, absorbing sunlight and storing its energy in the bonds of carbohydrate molecules?otherwise known as food and, nowadays, fuel. But photosynthesis is inefficient. For example, corn converted to ethanol captures less than 0.2 percent of the original energy in the sunlight as fuel. A photovoltaic cell can convert 15 percent of incoming photons into electricity, but such solar electricity is hard to store. Using solar power in an electrofuel bioreactor such as Liao's could theoretically convert as much as 9 percent of the incoming sunlight into the final and storable fuel. "By combining a man-made device, which has a great potential for improvement, with biological CO2 fixation, we get the best of both worlds," Liao argues, although that kind of efficiency has yet to be demonstrated. Even this demonstration process turns more sunlight into liquid fuel, however, than biofuels such as corn ethanol or even photosynthetic microbes genetically altered to make butanols. Plus, Liao adds, "it is possible to increase the productivity much higher, since Ralstonia is an industrial microorganism."

Feds, 5 states to push for Great Lakes wind farms

(AP) ? The Obama administration and five states have reached an agreement to speed up approval of offshore wind farms in the Great Lakes, which have been delayed by cost concerns and public opposition.

Under the deal, which administration officials disclosed to The Associated Press ahead of an announcement scheduled for Friday, state and federal agencies will craft a blueprint for speeding regulatory review of proposed wind farms without sacrificing environmental and safety standards. The Great Lakes have no offshore wind turbines, although a Cleveland partnership announced plans last year for a demonstration project that would place five to seven turbines in Lake Erie about 7 miles north of the city, generating 20-30 megawatts of electricity.

Offshore wind projects have been proposed elsewhere in the region, including Michigan and New York, stirring fierce debate.

Critics say they would ruin spectacular vistas, lower shoreline property values and harm birds and fish. New York Power Authority trustees last September abandoned a plan for private companies to place up to 200 turbines, each about 450 feet high, in Lakes Erie and Ontario. The Canadian province of Ontario in February 2011 ordered a moratorium on wind energy development in its Great Lakes waters to allow more study of environmental issues.

Supporters describe the lakes' winds as a vast, untapped source of clean energy and economic growth.

"This agreement among federal agencies and Great Lakes states is a smart, practical way to encourage the development of homegrown energy that will create jobs, power homes and reduce pollution in American communities," said Nancy Sutley, chairwoman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

Administration officials said the region's offshore winds could generate more than 700 gigawatts ? one-fifth of all potential wind energy nationwide. Each gigawatt of offshore wind could power 300,000 homes while reducing demand for electricity from coal, which emits greenhouse gases and other pollutants, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo.

Public resistance and logistical problems would pose formidable obstacles to approaching those levels. Yet harnessing only a small portion of the Great Lakes' offshore wind could generate thousands of jobs, officials said.

Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, New York and Pennsylvania signed the agreement. The other three states with Great Lakes coastlines ? Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin ? declined invitations but could join the partnership later, an administration official said.

The agreement is modeled after another between the federal government and Eastern states designed to support wind energy production in the Atlantic and encourage investment in new offshore wind technology.

"This agreement will enable states to work together to ensure that any proposed offshore wind projects are reviewed in a consistent manner, and that the various state and federal agencies involved collaborate and coordinate their reviews," Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett said.

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn said developing offshore wind energy would "promote economic development and create jobs, while reducing our dependence on foreign energy sources."

Among 10 federal agencies taking part are the Pentagon, the Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency, NOAA and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Developers would need state and federal approval to establish offshore wind farms. State governments own the Great Lakes bottomlands within U.S. territory, while a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would be required to erect the turbines and all 10 federal agencies would review the plans.

TEL: Goldman Adds to Conviction List on Automotive Rebound ...

Shares of TE Connectivity (TEL), formerly Tyco Electronics, are up 43 cents, or 1%, at $36.62 this morning after Goldman Sachs?s Craig Hettenbach added the stock to the firm?s ?Conviction List,? writing that expectations for its earnings ?have been reset such that TEL can beat estimates as the recovery strengthens.?

Hettenbach raised his price target on the shares from $39 to $45, noting that the stock could have ?catalysts? this year, in particular a rejuvenation of the company?s automotive electronics business:

We think TEL can grow its automotive business nearly 10% annually over the next few years?led by roughly mid-single-digit auto production growth and a re-acceleration in dollar content?which is 200-300 bp above Street expectations.

Moreover, the other markets for its wares seem like they may do a bit better than the Street is modeling:

A cyclical rebound in the comm (25% of sales) and industrial (10%) markets should drive better growth for TEL in the June quarter and through the rest of the year. And following disappointing margins in CY11, we expect an 85 bp rebound this year and 120 bp next year, well ahead of the expansion at peers.

Hettenbach raised his 2012 estimates to $14.53 billion in revenue and $3.26 per share in profit, up from a prior $14.45 billion and $3.22. The Street is at $14.09 billion and $3.01, he notes.

Art, glamour and glowing Divas highlight WrestleMania Premiere Party

MIAMI ??One look at the giant silver yacht parked at the marina, another glance toward the Swarovski crystals adorning Brie Bella's dress, and you knew this was a WrestleMania Premiere Party like no other.?(PHOTOS: RED CARPET?| FASHION SHOW?| ARTWORK)

Heck, even The Miz's Chihuahua ? yes, he walked around with a Chihuahua???was dressed to the nines in a miniature tuxedo.

Together with Grammy Award-winning artist Timbaland and Miami philanthropist Stuart Miller, WWE hosted a star-studded event Thursday night on Star Island to benefit Alex's Place at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. The 3,200-square-foot pediatric hematology-oncology clinic is set to open later this spring in Miami.

"WWE is all about giving back, and that's what we want to do here all week long during WrestleMania Week. We want to give back to the community," said WWE?s Executive Vice President of Creative, Stephanie McMahon.

The Real Housewives of Miami, NFL athletes, and other celebrities from all walks of life came together for the unforgettable celebration and live charity auction, which showcased works from local artists and fashion by celebrity designer Charlie Lapson, all in a glitzy atmosphere that resembled a South Beach club.

For the very first time, the event also featured a dazzling fashion show with WWE Divas Alicia Fox, Kelly Kelly, The Bellas and Eve modeling outfits from top designers alongside Miami Dolphins cheerleaders. All of the outfits, jewelry and accessories that the models wore on the runway, from Kelly's black-and-white animal print dress to Eve's flowing white gown, were auctioned off and raised thousands for the terrific cause.

"It's an amazing opportunity for the Superstars and Divas to be here," said Natalya, who was honored to be WWE.com's red carpet hostess for the event. "To use WWE as a platform to help kids with cancer is so rewarding. We put smiles on people's faces."

In addition to the head-turning high fashion, party attendees were given the one-of-a-kind opportunity to bid on WWE-themed artwork, a portion of which was created even while the event was going on. One of those works of art was a piece crafted by none other than WWE announcer Jerry ?The King? Lawler, who used an 8x10 photo of John Cena as inspiration for his portrait. After the frantic bidding war settled, the piece sold for $3,500 to the same woman who successfully bid for Lawler's portrait of The Undertaker at WrestleMania last year.

"If you ask me what this is worth, it's priceless," Lawler said of his Cena artwork.

Members of the WWE Universe who were unable to attend the gala continued getting involved in the auction ? and continue to do so through Sunday night ??from afar, as they bid online on WWE-themed works of art, with net proceeds from the online auction benefiting children's oncology care at the Center. (AUCTION DETAILS)

Even though the festivities gave Superstars and Divas a chance to let loose and have fun, the buzz for the main attraction to come ? WrestleMania XXVIII ? was quite palpable. The Bellas admitted they were torn about who they're rooting for in the "Once in a Lifetime" Match between John Cena and The Rock this Sunday. And they weren't the only ones.

James Durbin, be a STAR spokesman and former American Idol contestant, noted that his "gut instinct" tells him that Cena is going to triumph, but added that there's a controversial feel to the clash that suggests it could go either way.

As the party continued into the night, we inch one step closer to The Show of Shows, and the chatter on the red carpet made it clearer than those Swarovski crystals: the real premiere event of the week ? the year, in fact ? will soon be here.

Did mama ichthyosaur really explode? Maybe not

It is unlikely that the body of a mother ichthyosaur exploded, say researchers who offer another explanation for the scattered remains of embryos found around her in rock that was once deep underwater.

Rather, the scattering of the embryos was probably caused by minor sea currents after the expectant mother died and her body decayed some 182 million years ago, the researchers propose.

If this scenario sounds confusing, it is important to know that ichthyosaurs, extinct marine reptiles that lived at the same time as the dinosaurs, did not lay eggs but rather carried their young in their bodies until they gave birth. Ichthyosaurs resembled fish but, unlike most fish, breathed air through lungs.

The nearly intact skeleton of the female ichthyosaur in question was found in Holzmaden, Germany. But the remains of most of the approximately 10 embryos were scattered far outside her body it. Other fossilized ichthyosaur remains have been found in similarly strange arrangements, with skeletons usually complete but jumbled to some degree.

A Swiss and German research team set out to examine the idea that after death, such large-lunged marine creatures floated on the surface, with putrefaction gases building up inside them, until the gases escaped, often by bursting. Such explosions would jumble the bones.

The researchers examined the decay and preservation of ichthyosaur skeletons and compared this information with that of modern animals, particularly marine mammals. To get an idea of the amount of pressure that builds up after death during different stages of bloating, they looked at measurements from the abdomens of 100 human corpses.

"Our data and a review of the literature demonstrate that carcasses sink and do not explode (and spread skeletal elements)," the researchers wrote online Feb. 1 in the journal Palaeobiodiversity and Palaeoenvironments.

Generally, carcasses of ichthyosaurs would have sunk to the seafloor and broken down completely. Only under specific circumstances ? including in warmer water less than 164 feet (50 meters) deep ? would gas inside the body have brought the remains to the surface, said the researchers, led by Achim Reisdorf of the University of Basel in Switzerland. When this happened, the carcass would decompose slowly, scattering bones over a wide area.?

Ichthyosaurs' remains stayed neatly in place only under specific conditions, according to the research team: The water pressure had to be great enough to prevent them from floating, scavengers did not pick them over, and strong currents did not disturb them.

The female ichthyosaur died in water about 492 feet (150 m) deep. Decomposition of the body released the embryo skeletons, and minor currents along the seafloor distributed them around her body, the researchers speculate.

Fossils show signs of earliest burrowing

Ancient diggers may have stirred up evolutionary forces

Web edition : Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

Worms may have first burrowed into mud more than 550 million years ago. The tunnels they apparently created, preserved in fossilized sediments and reported in a new study, could be the oldest example of animals significantly churning up the ground.

That newly plowed seafloor in turn might have helped to spur the rise of new kinds of macroscopic life late in the Ediacaran period ? just before the Cambrian explosion produced most of the major animal groups around today.

?We think that Ediacaran organisms diversified as a reaction to habitat remodeling by ? burrowing,? says Dima Grazhdankin, a paleontologist at the A.A. Trofimuk Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics in Novosibirsk, Russia, and coauthor of a new paper published online March 19 in Geology.

Grazhdankin and colleagues found the fossils in central Siberia, in uplifted rock that had once been mud deep underwater. Tiny, crescent-shaped traces cutting through 5 centimeters of former sediment looked like small tunnels made by creatures scooping and flinging dirt from front to back.

Only a creature with bilateral symmetry ? not just a front and back, but a top and bottom as well ? could have made such a pattern, says Grazhdankin. Previous evidence of bilaterians this early in the fossil record has proved controversial. Still, he credits a primitive worm.

Digging could have helped the worm find food, as well as open up new living spaces for other creatures. Mud that?s been churned up, or bioturbated, would be softer, freed of the stiff microbial mat that covered much of the seafloor at the time. The softer mud would be easier to colonize, possibly helping to explain why macroscopic life spread and became more diverse late in the Ediacaran.

Shuhai Xiao, a paleontologist at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, says the appearance of bioturbation so early could even have had a planetwide impact. Churning up seafloor sediments could have helped to recycle carbon and sulfur in the sediments back into the ocean, for instance, changing seawater chemistry and even oxygen levels in the atmosphere.

?If these fossils do represent evidence for bioturbation, they would have important implications for early animal evolution and its impact on the Earth system,? he says.

But Xiao still needs some convincing. Since none of the densely packed traces in the rock crisscross, he wonders whether the patterns are burrows at all ? or simply the imprint of a creature that died an inglorious death in the mud.

(AP) ? Britain's Duchess of Cornwall has visited the set of the TV series "The Killing," where she was greeted by Danish actress Sofie Graaboel in her trademark off-white-and-black sweater.

Graaboel plays police detective Sarah Lund in the popular Danish crime series.

The Danish palace says Camilla had asked to visit the film set during her and Prince Charles' third and final leg of their Scandinavia tour.

Camilla and Denmark's Australian-born Crown Princess Mary wore headphones Tuesday as they saw the shooting of the third series on a monitor.

Meanwhile, Prince Charles and Crown Prince Frederik, heir to Europe's oldest monarchy, visited a carbon-neutral kindergarten and an activity center for the elderly near Copenhagen.

Validity of the travel insurance solely depends upon the validity of the Schengen visa; in short, both Schengen Visa & Travel insurance must be valid right from the time the traveler lands in a country until the time he moves out of that country.

The validity of a Schengen Visa is from 14 days to 90 days and hence even the travel insurance plan must be within the same time frame. It can be extended as and when the traveler renews their Schengen Visa after the completion of their stay. The minimum amount of travel insurance to be taken is $37,500 for any of the above mentioned 25 Schengen countries.

Once the plan is active, travelers are covered from expenses that are incurred due to the traveler falling sick and include reimbursement of medical bills, baggage being lost, cancellation of trip or even death under critical circumstances. Please note that travel insurance will not cover any pre existing medical history of a traveler.

While taking a travel insurance policy for the country you plan to travel, ensure that the travel insurance company has got their own representative office in that country of travel. If not, check with other travel insurance companies. Once a traveler returns back to his home country, the policy becomes void.

A visitor does not require undergoing any medical examination inorder to avail the travel insurance cover. For example a $50,000 travel cover, for a couple who are both aged 25 years, the premium works out to only $79 for one month for both together. The benefits available are hospital room expenses, intensive care unit, surgery, drugs etc. for a total amount of $50,000 incase the traveler had to be hospitalized during this period.

If you are planning to travel France or any of the 25 Schengen visa countries, you can visit and learn more about travel insurance for France.

Kirsten Haglund, Miss America 2008, Details Lifelong Battle With Anorexia

Kirsten Haglund was crowned Miss America back in 2008, but she was hardly the vision of health and happiness she appeared to be, by her own admission.

The blonde beauty has suffered from severe anorexia-nervosa most of her life.

The Michigan native, 23, has opened up to CNN about the shocking details of her illness, which she says began to take its toll when she was only 12.

Haglund says she picked up bad habits from other aspiring ballet dancers.

Kirsten Haglund Image

"I was in ballet from just 3-years-old. So from a very early age, the ideal female body type was very thin," Haglund says. "That was the first image I had."

"I always equated beauty with being skinny. I looked at what they were doing and so many of them were throwing away their lunches and not eating."

"I thought, ‘If I can at least be thin, I know I can be successful at ballet.’"

"I was living off coffee, Diet Coke and gum," she said about her diet. "Every once in a while, I'd have vegetables, fruit or a spoonful of peanut butter."

“I knew there was something wrong , but I didn't know how to stop.”

Her disease continued to worsen, and in the next three years, Kirsten dropped over 30 more pounds before her mother intervened and got her help.

After quitting ballet and focusing on recovery, she decided to enter a local beauty pageant - something that ironically helped her cope with the issue.

"It was a really good educational period for me," she said. "From hearing other people's stories, I learned how to share my own personal struggles."

The stunner has since started the Kirsten Haglund Foundation, a charity that provides financial aid to people seeking treatment for eating disorders.

She is currently a political science major at Emory University.

Trayvon Martin State Attorney

Demonstrators at Thursday's rally for Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Fla.

Most of my life I?ve lived with an eating disorder but I am better now. I am trying to figure out what to do with my life. I?ve been in school for three years majoring in health science. I decided I want to work with patients with eating disorders. I am not sure what to do. I don?t want to be in school for ten years. I looked into psychology but I need a lot of chemistry classes for that and I am terrible and chemistry and science related fields.

I?m almost 21 and really need to decide what I want to do but I have no idea :/

What about becoming a dietician?

Chevron, Transocean charged in Brazilian oil spill

RIO DE JANEIRO/NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Brazilian federal prosecutor filed criminal charges on Wednesday against Chevron and drill-rig operator Transocean for a November oil spill, raising the stakes in a legal saga that is adding to Chevron's woes in Latin America and threatens to slow Brazil's offshore oil boom.

Prosecutor Eduardo Santos de Oliveira also filed criminal charges against 17 key executives and employees at Chevron and Transocean, owner of the world's largest oil rig fleet. Among the defendants is George Buck, 46, a U.S. national in charge of Chevron's operations in Brazil, the prosecutor's office said in a statement.

"The spilling of oil affected the entire maritime ecosystem, possibly pushing some species to extinction, and caused impacts on economic activity in the region," Santos de Oliveira, federal prosecutor in Campos de Goytacazes, Brazil, said in his filing. "The employees of Chevron and Transocean caused a contamination time bomb of prolonged effect."

Chevron and Transocean strongly disputed the charges.

Santos de Oliveira's charges "are not consistent with the facts of the incident and there have been no coastal or wildlife impacts," said Chevron spokesman Kurt Glaubitz.

"Transocean strongly disagrees with the indictments," the company said in a statement read by communications chief Guy Cantwell. "They are without merit and we will vigorously defend our company, our people, our reputation and our quality of services."

The charges also allege that Transocean's Sedco 706 rig, which drilled the well that leaked, had "grave" equipment failures that were detected by Brazil's national petroleum agency, the ANP.

In addition to Buck, prosecutors leveled criminal charges against other Chevron and Transocean employees, including five other Americans, five Brazilians, two Frenchmen, two Australians, a Canadian and a Briton. Among them was Guilherme Dantas Rocha Coelho, 38, the Brazilian head of Transocean's Brazil operations.

All were ordered to turn in their passports on Saturday and remain in the country, pending charges. Each individual will be required to post 1 million reais ($550,000) bail and each company 10 million reais ($5.5 million) to ensure payment of future fines, the statement said.

Prison sentences could be as lengthy as 31 years.

Under Brazilian law, a judge now has to examine the charges and determine whether to proceed with formal indictments. Either way, Chevron and Transocean likely face years of legal action in Brazil, one of the world's most promising oil frontiers.

Lawyers have had travel bans lifted while similar cases were being litigated and few individuals or companies have ever been convicted of environmental crimes in Brazil and fewer have gone to jail.

The spill was less than 0.1 percent of the size of the 4 million-barrel BP oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. Transocean owned the rig in that spill.

ROUSSEFF WARNS OIL COMPANIES

The criminal prosecution follows a 20 billion reais ($11 billion) civil lawsuit filed in November over the spill, the largest ecological fine in Brazilian history. The indictments stem from a 3,000-barrel spill in the Frade field, about 120 km (75 miles) off the coast of Rio de Janeiro state.

Chevron's troubles in Brazil could force it to rethink its Latin American strategies. A shortage of trained workers, engineers and equipment have driven up costs in Brazil and Chevron faces an $18 billion environmental verdict in Ecuador.

The charges come less than a week after Chevron asked for and received permission to temporarily stop production the Frade field after finding new seeps on the sea surface of its exploration area in early March. The field was producing 61,500 barrels a day, down from about 80,000 before the November spill.

Chevron owns 52 percent of Frade and is the operator. Brazil's state-controlled oil company Petrobras owns 30 percent and a Japanese group led by Inpex and Sojitz owns 18 percent. The partners have spent more than $2 billion developing the field.

Chevron, the No. 2 U.S. oil company, said on Wednesday that oil from the new seabed is chemically different to crude from the November spill and that the two leaks are unrelated. "There is no evidence that the two sets of seeps are related," Glaubitz said in an email to Reuters. "Oil samples collected from the second seep and analyzed by the IPEX lab in Brazil and reviewed by Chevron indicate that the oil is not from the Frade production reservoir." Chevron said oil from the recent seep contained no drilling "mud," suggesting it is not a residual spill or a new complication of the November spill. Only about 1 barrel of heavier crude has been found flowing out of the new seep. Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, a former energy minister who also served as chairwoman of the Petrobras board, warned oil companies on Wednesday that they must strictly follow security procedures in Brazil. "On this question there can be no exceptions to being within safety limits and knowing them, to never test them and never go beyond them," she said in Rio at the swearing in ceremony for the new head of oil regulator ANP. The discovery of a new seep in the Frade field this month prompted Santos de Oliveira, the prosecutor, to allege that Chevron's drilling has led to dangerous faults in the undersea oil reservoir at Frade that could be irreparably damaged and may eventually leak much more oil.

ARTICLES MANIAC ? Use This Fitness Tips To Avoid Health Disease

Fitness is a state of mind, as well as a lifestyle. Starting out on a new fitness plan is easy. Get up and start moving and you are already on your way. This article is designed to give you some tips to help you develop a fitness regimen that works for you.

Cardiovascular Exercise

Even if you are using your fitness program to build muscle, you can benefit from cardiovascular exercise. Aerobic exercise will help build the endurance of your muscles, and also, improve your lung capacity so you can work out longer without becoming fatigued. In addition, it increases blood flow to your muscles so you can gain more muscle mass from other exercises.

Cardiovascular exercise should not be the only type of exercise you participate in, but it should definitely be a huge part of your workout. Walking on a treadmill is an efficient way to do this kind of exercise. It is recommended that you do not perform cardiovascular exercise more than an hour a day. The reason for this is you start to lose muscle mass. The right amount of cardiovascular activity really strengthens a person?s fitness level.

To prevent injury when working out, you should stretch after you?ve sufficiently warmed up your muscles. Do some cardiovascular exercises (jogging, running, bicycling, etc.) first and then stretch your muscles. If you stretch too early, you can leave yourself vulnerable to pulled or torn muscles. Stretching after cardiovascular exercise also helps to improve flexibility.

Being fit isn?t all about lifting weights. Cardiovascular exercise plays an important part of fitness as well. Activities, such as jogging or cycling, can get your heart pumping really fast, in order to burn off excess fat. It gives your muscles a workout and increases leg and core strength.

Many products promise to get rid of your beer belly and eliminate troublesome fat within the midsection, the most effective routes to core strength is very simple: running. Running burns fat and calories at a high rate. Abdominal strength and muscle training is important, but weight loss and fat burning come through cardiovascular exercise, as well.

Cardio training is also a vital piece of the overall fitness puzzle. Cardiovascular exercise ? exercise that elevates the heart rate and respiration ? burns fat, improves performance and contributes to overall health and fitness. In fact, it is no exaggeration to say that cardio is the most effective kind of exercise for keeping fit ? although it should not be anyone?s sole form of exercise.

Aerobic training greatly lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease and helps maintain a healthy cardiovascular system. You should have a schedule for aerobic or cardiovascular exercise, and you should stick to that schedule. Three days a week at an hour a day is good, or you can choose to do thirty minutes to an hour daily. It is up to you, but you should always incorporate cardiovascular exercise into your routine. Get up and get going. Exercising is useful to our body. You don?t need to devote a lot of time to benefit from the results of starting a fitness plan. Incorporate the tips you?ve found here into your daily routine. The most important thing is that you do something, and your body will thank you.

The Diagnosis and Progression of MS Disease | Health and Fitness

Autoimmune disorders have been in existence along with immunity processes but it appears like the occurrence of disorders like MS disease has risen over the last few years. Many individuals pinpoint things like diet and lifestyle as the contributors. Good thing health care science has yet still been able to use various methods for identifying multiple sclerosis. So, while diet and lifestyle factors may very well play a role in determining who is the most likely to develop MS, our current understanding of the illness has led to better rates of diagnosis, better multiple sclerosis treatment options, and a better overall quality of life for patients.

Like many other immune conditions like Celiac disease or allergies, medical science still isn?t entirely sure why the body decides to have an exaggerated response to some stimuli, and not others. MS disease is particularly perplexing, since it results when the body attacks its own nervous system. So, unlike allergies where the allergen can be easily avoided, people suffering from MS disease can?t really escape it. Nobody knows what prompts the body to begin to attack itself, and that is a major focus of MS research. All we do know is that, for some reason, it appears that the body begins to attack the myelin sheaths that cover nerves. This causes scarring and lesions on the affected areas, and the myelin eventually disintegrates. Lesions or areas of plaque can form within the central nervous system, and patients can end up suffering from a wide range of symptoms, depending on which of their nerves sustained damage.

When someone develops MS disease, their symptoms can appear in one of two ways. For most people, symptoms will show up in sudden, acute attacks. For some, symptoms can appear gradually as a result of sustained nerve damage, with or without acute attacks. Since multiple sclerosis symptoms can masquerade as symptoms of any number of other neurological conditions, particularly if they show up gradually, sudden attacks of symptoms can actually make the disease easier for doctors to properly diagnose.

The good news is that MS disease is not fatal. The bad news is that there is no cure, and even the best diagnostic techniques are only good between 90 and 95% of the time. There is no simple, fail-safe test for MS disease. Therefore, MS diagnosis relies on an actual patient interview and physical exam, and a neurological exam. During the patient interview, doctors ask questions about the patient?s general health, family history of other neurological conditions, history of illness or injury, any incidences of substance abuse, and any other information that might indicate that the patient is suffering from a condition other than MS disease. During the physical exam, the doctor will look for unusual reflex responses, or other signs indicating neurological problems.

After that, the patient will undergo a neurological exam, usually involving an MRI or other diagnostic imaging technique that can show lesions or areas of plaque. If at least two plaques or lesions are identified in two separate areas, and the interview and exam have ruled out other causes, then an MS diagnosis will be reached, and multiple sclerosis treatment can begin. It is important for treatment of MS disease to start as soon as possible after a diagnosis is reached, since this will have an impact on how much damage the immune system is able to cause to the nervous system.

Since there is no cure for MS disease, that means that multiple sclerosis treatment has to focus on two areas- alleviating pain and other symptoms, and slowing down MS disease?s progression. While alleviating symptoms of MS might sound deceptively easy, it?s often much harder than simply prescribing some pain killers. The symptoms of MS can vary a lot, and many people will experience things like vision problems, fatigue, and memory problems, which aren?t easily medicated away. Some symptoms will improve over time, while others will gradually worsen. This emphasizes the importance of slowing down the progression of MS disease.

This is usually done with immunomodulating drugs, like those based on interferon beta. These help modify the immune system?s response, to reduce inflammation in myelin lesions, repair damage to the blood-brain barrier, and slow down the rate at which the nervous system is damaged. This is a vitally important component of multiple sclerosis treatment, since MS disease will continue to progress as the body continues to attack the nervous system. By slowing this down, the amount of damage sustained by the nervous system is reduced, and patients can lead happier, more productive lives.

Some people will experience MS disease that frequently relapses. This is incredibly frustrating for patients, since an acute attack of symptoms can come out of virtually nowhere. Fortunately, immunomodulating drugs can reduce the severity and frequency of these relapses, while steroid medications can help control them when they happen, and palliative care can help relieve the symptoms of these relapses.

Many people with the MS disease explore various natural forms of multiple sclerosis treatment. While most of these are still being researched for their safety and efficacy, they offer patients with an easy, virtually side-effect free way to take an active role in their own treatment. Some treatments may even allow people to reduce their dependence on conventional drugs, which can help reduce the instance of unwanted side effects from many of the most common medications used in multiple sclerosis treatment.

Left untreated, MS disease usually continues to progress, causing increasingly severe nerve damage. Though it isn?t fatal, this nerve damage can be incredibly debilitating to patients, robbing them of the ability to move, see, or even speak. Though our understanding of MS disease is far from perfect, modern methods of multiple sclerosis treatment mean that this doesn?t have to happen. Patients with MS can continue to live long, productive lives, and many even continue to attend school and work as normal. Someday, medical science will hopefully discover a cure for MS disease. Until then, modern treatment methods allow people to remain happy and hopeful.
