Presidential contenders boosted by super PACs

(AP) ? Think of super PACs as shadow cash machines for presidential candidates. They're going to be big this year.

Real big.

The independent fundraising groups can gather and spend unlimited money to run ads supporting a candidate or attacking a rival. The leading Republican contenders, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, both have at least one super PAC working to boost their candidacies. Another super PAC is backing President Barack Obama's re-election bid.

Although they aren't permitted to coordinate directly with the campaigns, which must follow strict federal restrictions on what they can raise and spend, many of the groups are staffed by former aides and fundraisers who know the candidates' thinking and strategy. Watchdog groups see super PACs as just the latest erosion of campaign finance rules that date back to the Watergate era of the 1970s.

Republican-leaning super PACs were first influential in the 2010 congressional elections. Now, presidential contenders are receiving millions of dollars in financial backing from new free-spending, unregulated political action groups.

Make Us Great Again PAC, a super PAC supporting Republican front-runner Rick Perry, was co-founded by Mike Toomey, a former chief of staff to the Texas governor. Documents show the group plans to spend $55 million to support Perry's White House run.

The Perry-aligned super PAC will have to compete with Restore Our Future, formed to boost his top rival, Mitt Romney. It raised $20 million from January through June. Its treasurer, Charles Spies, was general counsel for Romney's 2008 White House bid.

The third-quarter 2011 campaign fundraising period ends Friday. Campaign finance reports from that quarter will offer a clearer picture of how much help the super PACs will be able to offer their candidates.

The super PACs that favor certain candidates have already begun spending on television advertising. Keeping Conservatives United, a super PAC supporting Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, assailed Perry's record in Texas.

Candidates will continue to do their own campaign fundraising, following much more restrictive federal rules than those governing super PACs. A presidential campaign can raise at most $5,000 total from an individual donor ? $2,500 each for the primary and general elections. Super PACs can solicit and spend unlimited funds. Some super PACs also have affiliated groups whose donors are allowed to remain anonymous.

One of those is Priorities USA, a super PAC formed by former Obama White House aides Bill Burton and Sean Sweeney to promote the president's re-election. A sister group, Priorities USA Action, allows anonymous contributions even though the president has publicly criticized them.

Obama raised $750 million for his 2008 campaign and is looking to exceed that total for his re-election effort, raising the question of why he would even need a super PAC working on his behalf. And the Perry and Romney campaigns are expected to far outpace all other GOP competitors in fundraising, with their aligned super PACs only helping to cement that advantage.

To some degree, outside groups are supplanting the role of the major political parties, which help coordinate messages and get-out-the-vote efforts for candidates, but also operate under strict federal fundraising rules. The party committees remain an important, if somewhat diluted, force. The Democratic National Committee has raised more than $80 million to support Obama's re-election campaign, recent federal filings show.

After the Watergate scandal, Congress put limits on campaign fundraising and spending as a way to stem the corruptive influence of money and created the Federal Election Commission to enforce those limits. Government watchdogs say super PACs are undermining that intent.

"The most dangerous vehicle for corruption in the political system is the candidate-specific super PAC," said Democracy 21 president Fred Wertheimer, a longtime advocate for campaign-finance limits. "If we can't shut them down, they are going to spread like wildfire to members of Congress, and they're going to eviscerate contribution limits enacted over a period of a century to prevent corruption of federal officeholders."

Restore Our Future, which backs Romney, came under scrutiny recently for a $1 million contribution it received from a donor identified as W Spann LLC ? actually a corporation set up by Edward Conard, a former Romney colleague at the Bain Capital investment firm. Restore Our Future's report to the Federal Election Commission was amended once Conard stepped forward, and Romney has brushed off the controversy as a nonissue.

Romney spoke at a July fundraiser for Restore Our Future, raising questions of how closely a candidate can work with a super PAC before crossing the line into coordination.

Some Washington campaign veterans aren't convinced the new PACs will by default be corruptive. Michael Toner, counsel to Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty's now-abandoned presidential campaign, said the outside groups will bring a host of new messages ? competing in the marketplace of ideas ? that are transparent in their sources of funding.

Super PACs made their debut following a Supreme Court decision that removed restrictions on corporate and union spending in elections. Super PACs spent more than $65 million that cycle, according to data from the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks campaign spending. Republican-leaning groups far outpaced their Democratic counterparts, helping Republicans win control of the House and pick up six seats in the Senate.

The biggest-spending super PAC that year was American Crossroads, a GOP group connected to Karl Rove, former President George W. Bush's longtime political director. Crossroads and an affiliated organization, Crossroads GPS, spent nearly $38 million to influence House and Senate races.

Crossroads has already raised $25 million this year and has spent more than $1 million on ads in several special elections around the country, as well as to influence the debate over Obama's new $447 million jobs proposal and the negotiations last summer over raising the federal debt ceiling. Crossroads president Steven Law said super PACs help give voters an abundance of competitive information ? not just from well-funded incumbents ? that's ultimately good for the country.

"Just with President Obama's billion-dollar campaign and the union juggernaut alone, we believe that Republicans will be significantly outspent in 2012," he said, "and our goal is to prevent them from using that crushing weight to irradiate Republican candidates up and down the ticket."

Democrats say they formed their own super PACs as a way to respond to the huge Republican fundraising advantage in 2010.

"You play with the rules that you're given, and you cede no ground," said Rodell Mollineau, the president of American Bridge 21st Century, a research organization for Democratic super PACs. "You have to push back forcefully."

Under-fire Mullen seeks tougher line

WASHINGTON (Agencies) ? The US will now have to take a tougher line in demanding that Pakistan rein in terror groups, says Admiral Mike Mullen, the outgoing US military boss who recently accused Pakistan of ?exporting terrorism? and hurting American interests in Afghanistan.
?I am losing people, and I am just not going to stand for that. I have been Pakistan?s best friend. What does it say when I am at that point? What does it say about where we are?? Admiral Mullen, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, told The Wall Street Journal in an interview. Mullen who demits office by the end of this month said he was leaving with a muddled legacy on Pakistan, an area which he had made a top priority because its border region ?has been a haven for al-Qaeda and other militant groups intent on attacking US interest?.
Explaining his switch, Admiral Mullen, said that the partnership approach with Islamabad, which he had long championed had fallen short and would be difficult to revive. The Admiral took his conclusions to Congress last week where he declared publicly that Pakistan?s military intelligence is collaborating with a militant group that US links for attack on Americans in Afghanistan, triggering a major rift between the two nations.
According to the WSJ, the shift by Mullen infuriated officials in Islamabad, who deny supporting militants, and cast a pall of uncertainty over the tenuous US-Pakistan bond. Mullen was disappointed when a major Pakistani offensive planned against Haqqani fighters in key tribal areas didn?t happen, the US paper said. Even now, though, he stressed that while Pakistan?s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency has provided strategic support to the Haqqanis, they don?t necessarily control the details of the militant group?s operations. ?It is very clear they have supported them. I don?t think the Haqqanis can be turned on and off like a light switch. But there are steps that could be taken to impact the Haqqanis over time,? he said.
Special Correspondent adds: Mullen?s allegations that Haqqani network is a ?veritable arm? of the ISI was overstated and contributed to overheated reactions in Pakistan and misperceptions in Washington, The Washington Post reported Wednesday. Citing American officials involved in US policy in the region, the newspaper said that the internal criticism by the officials reflects concern over the accuracy of Mullen?s characterisations at a time when Obama administration officials have been frustrated in their efforts to persuade Pakistan to break its ties to Afghan insurgent groups.
Pakistan has rejected Mullen?s accusations about its involvement with the Haqqani group, with some officials suggesting that the retiring admiral was probably looking for scapegoats to cover US failures in Afghanistan.
The Post dispatch said the Obama administration has long sought to pressure Pakistan, but to do so in a nuanced way that does not sever the US relationship with a country that American officials see as crucial to winning the war in Afghanistan and maintaining long-term stability in the region.
Mullen?s testimony to a Senate committee was widely interpreted as an accusation by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff that Pakistan?s military and espionage agencies sanction and direct bloody attacks against US troops and targets in Afghanistan. Such interpretations prompted new levels of indignation among senior officials in both the United States and Pakistan.
Mullen?s language ?overstates the case?, said a senior Pentagon official with access to classified intelligence files on Pakistan, because there is scant evidence of direction or control. If anything, the official said, the intelligence indicates that Pakistan treads a delicate if duplicitous line, providing support to insurgent groups including the Haqqani network but avoiding actions that would provoke a US response.
?The Pakistani government has been dealing with Haqqani for a long time and still sees strategic value in guiding Haqqani and using them for their purposes,? the Pentagon official said. But ?it?s not in their interest to inflame us in a way that an attack on a [US] compound would do.?
US officials stressed that there is a broad agreement in the military and intelligence community that the Haqqani network has mounted some of the most audacious attacks of the Afghanistan war, including a 20-hour siege by gunmen this month on the US embassy compound in Kabul.
A senior aide to Mullen defended the chairman?s testimony, which was designed to prod the Pakistanis to sever ties to the Haqqani group if not contain it by force. ?I don?t think the Pakistani reaction was unexpected,? said Capt John Kirby. ?The chairman stands by every word of his testimony,? he was quoted as saying.
But Mullen?s pointed message and the difficulty in matching his words to the underlying intelligence underscore the suspicion and distrust that have plagued the United States and Pakistan since they were pushed together as counterterrorism partners after the Sept 11, 2001, attacks.
US military officials said that Mullen?s testimony has been misinterpreted, and that his remark that the Haqqani network had carried out recent truck-bomb and embassy attacks ?with ISI support? was meant to imply broad assistance, but not necessarily direction by Pakistan?s agency.
US officials said that even evidence that has surfaced since Mullen?s testimony is open to differences in interpretation, including cellphones recovered from gunmen who were killed during the assault on the US embassy.
One official said the phones were used to make repeated calls to numbers associated with the Haqqani network, as well as presumed ?ISI operatives?. But the official declined to explain the basis for that conclusion.
The senior Pentagon official treated the assertion with scepticism, saying the term ?operatives? covers a wide range of supposed associates of the ISI. ?Does it mean the same Haqqani numbers [also found in the phones], or is it actually uniformed officers? of Pakistan?s spy service?
US officials said Mullen was unaware of the cellphones until after he testified.
Online adds: Pentagon has said it will continue to work with Pakistan to resolve differences.
?We want to maintain a relationship with Pakistan that?s grounded in common interests, to include going after terrorists that threaten both countries,? Pentagon Press Secretary George Little told reporters.
?There are differences from time to time in the relationship with Pakistan, as there are in any partnership,? he said. ?Those differences have been made public, and we continue to discuss (them) in private.?
Despite the bickering, little said the Pentagon looks forward to working with the Pakistanis to try to resolve such differences. ?It s important that both sides continue the dialogue,? he added, ?and that?s happening?.
Afp adds: The White House Wednesday declined to reinforce the top US military officer?s warning that the al-Qaeda-linked Haqqani network was a ?veritable arm? of Pakistani intelligence.
But a senior official again candidly said Washington was concerned about links between the network, blamed for attacks on US troops in Afghanistan, and Pakistani?s Inter-Services Intelligence, amid a fierce row with Islamabad.
?It is not language I would use,? said White House spokesman Jay Carney, when questioned whether the president shared the views Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, expressed last week.
?It?s a matter a matter of semantics,? said Carney, seeking to ease the row over the comments by noting Pakistan?s close cooperation in the past in the US struggle against al-Qaeda.
?The administration?s view... is that the continuing safe havens that the Haqqani network enjoys in Pakistan and the links between the Pakistani military and the Haqqani network are troubling, and we want action taken against them.?
?What we have said and what is our policy, is that there are links. I think that is irrefutable,? said Carney, but declined to say whether the views expressed by Mullen were approved by the White House in advance.

World stocks stall amid wait for Europe debt plan (AP)

BANGKOK ? World stocks stalled Wednesday amid waning hopes that European leaders would quickly agree on a plan to contain a debt crisis that threatens to derail global economic growth.

Benchmark oil hovered above $83 per barrel while the dollar gained against the euro but fell against the yen.

In early European trading, Britain's FTSE 100 index fell 0.6 percent to 5,262.11. Germany's DAX dropped 1 percent to 5,572.36 and France's CAC-40 was 0.8 percent lower at 3,000.72.

Wall Street also braced for a lower opening, with Dow Jones industrial futures down less than 0.1 percent at 11,110 and S&P 500 futures slipping 0.2 percent to 1,167.60.

Shares in Asia lost steam after spending the morning in positive territory.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index eked out a gain of less than 0.1 percent to close up just 5.70 points at 8,615.65. The most sought-after shares included blue chips such as Nissan Motor Corp., which shot up 4.2 percent and Mazda Motor Corp., which was 3.4 percent higher. Panasonic Corp. gained 3.8 percent.

Australia's S&P/ASX 200 was 0.9 percent higher at 4,039.50. Benchmarks in Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines also gained. But South Korea's Kospi gave up earlier gains and closed down 0.7 percent to 1,723.09. Hong Kong's Hang Seng sank 0.7 percent to 18,011.06 while benchmarks in Singapore and Thailand also fell.

Worries about Europe have weighed on stock markets for months, and any glimmer of positive action tends to spark buying.

"Whenever there is a bit of a sense that there will be some credible action, in Europe in particular, then investors are pretty trigger happy on not wanting to miss out," said Ric Spooner, chief market analyst at CMC Markets in Sydney.

"At the end of the day, I think everybody is very conscious of the fact that things are far from certain."

Others cautioned that if a concrete rescue plan for debt laden Greece does not emerge soon, then stocks could head right back down.

"Every time the market gets its hopes up that a solution to the eurozone crisis is near the rug gets pulled from under it," Ben Potter, market strategist at IG Markets in Melbourne, said in a research note.

"Only when we see firm action being taken, rather than hollow promises will confidence and sentiment begin to improve."

Energy and mining stocks rose as fears dissipated of a financial blowup in Europe, which could drag down economic growth across the globe and reduce demand for raw materials such as crude oil and metals.

Japanese energy explorer Inpex Corp. rose 1.1 percent and Hong Kong-listed shares of PetroChina, the country's biggest oil and gas company, gained 2.1 percent. Newcrest Mining Ltd., Australia's largest gold miner, jumped 2 percent.

A default by Greece could ripple across the globe, threatening the solvency of European banks and other financial institutions that have large holdings of the country's bonds. A default could also hurt U.S. companies which send about 20 percent of their exports to Europe.

Investment sentiment was boosted late Tuesday, when Greek lawmakers passed a controversial property tax ? one of a host of painful debt-reduction measures it must undertake in exchange for rescue loans. The country will go bankrupt unless it receives an euro8 billion ($11 billion) rescue loan before mid-October.

Another encouraging sign of Europe's commitment to Athens came from German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who said her country would do whatever it could to help the debt-riddled Greece.

Those signals helped boost Wall Street stocks Tuesday. The Dow rose 1.3 percent to close at 11,190.69. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 1.1 percent to 1,175.38. The Nasdaq composite rose 1.2 percent to 2,546.83.

In currency trading, the dollar fell to 76.44 yen from 76.75 yen late Tuesday in New York. The euro fell to $1.3602 from $1.3641.

Benchmark crude for November delivery was down 78 cents to $83.67 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $4.21 to close at $84.45 per barrel on Tuesday on the Nymex.

Family Day disappoints students yet again | The Bray Online

duck In all of my time here at Southern Arkansas University I have never seen anything quite as absurd as ?Family Day.? It is apparently one of SAU?s big events here on campus which, in all reality, it is big if you compare it to Homecoming Day and the Spring Concert.

Family Day was made for students to see their families, who they may not otherwise see until Thanksgiving or Christmas break, but it?s such a waste of time. People spend time decorating beds for the Residence Hall Association?s Bed Race, coming up with strategies for the Greek Canoe race and setting up tables for the Organization Fair just for one day.

What is the point of racing highly decorated beds down the street with some poor soul hanging on for dear life? It?s entertaining when they crash, but after doing all that work what is the point of just destroying the bed in the race. The winning hall gets a trophy. A trophy? Really, SAU?! All we can give them is a trophy, no small scholarship or anything for the people running or even the rider? And not even a trophy for them, the trophy is for the entire residence hall. Shouldn?t the students who end up with a few bumps and bruises that last all weekend and then some get something for their time and effort?

Then we sit around or walk around a dry and stinky organization fair. I don?t know whose idea it was to have an organization fair at the Duck Pond, but I think that they should at least try to re-think that. Who really wants to eat food around smelly ducks? I don?t know about everyone else, but I don?t. So I?m supposed to stand around eating stale popcorn while watching people race around the pond for an engraved oar. Quite frankly I must say that Family Day prizes aren?t worth much.

Later in the day we take our families to the football game where some students pile themselves into the stands to watch the Muleriders lose. I?ve been to a good number of football games here over the past three years and I think that they won maybe four games. We?re expected to have school spirit and show our families a good time, but what?s good about destroyed beds, smelly ducks and a losing football team?

I?m not a big football fan, but I would expect that the team of any type of sport would play like they love it. Well that or at least play like their Mom or someone they care about is watching. So Mulerider Football team if you are playing like someone you care about is watching then I feel so sorry for them.

Sure students get in free to the games, but not even free admission is worth going to watch the team lose especially if you are bringing your family and they have to pay. When my sister visited for one Family Day I was embarrassed that she had to pay to watch the team lose.

I get that Family Day is about spending time with your family and friends, but how about something that is actually enjoyable. Something that provides a good time to all. More than likely less than half of the campus actually participates in Family Day because the other half ditched to go home and do something fun.

I personally think that Family Day is nothing but an epic failure. It?s supposed to be a fun interactive visit with students and their families, but all I see are people walking around at the same events every year for a few hours to watch a notoriously losing team.

Thanks SAU for making Family Day so enjoyable.

Tips to Remember When Looking for Outdoor Camping Tents

When it comes to enjoying the great outdoors, you will find that there is one piece of camping gear that will be more important than the rest: your tent. Outdoor camping tents are the most important piece of equipment that you will need to go camping. Think about it: you can cook over an open fire, you can scrounge for food, and you can even use leaves as toilet paper, but it's not the same if you are sleeping out under the open stars or a heavy rain.

Choosing your tent will make or break your camping trip, and it is important that you choose the best quality camping tents when planning your outdoor adventure. If you choose the right tent, you will be able to sleep in peace, comfort, and total luxury. If you choose the wrong tent, you may find that it will blow away, be difficult to erect, be too cramped for all of you, or even leak. The best quality camping tents should be the only ones you buy, as only the quality outdoor camping tents will put up with the wear and tear of camping life.

Here are some things to remember when looking for outdoor camping tents:

  • The size of your tent is one of the most important factors to consider. If you are one person camping alone, you will require a much smaller tent than 4 people sleeping together. If your tent is too big, that will not be much of a problem. A tent that is too small, however, will be uncomfortable and cramped. Choose a tent that will accommodate all of the camping party comfortably, and you may find that getting a bigger tent than you need can actually make the trip more comfortable.
  • The material used for the tent is another important factor to take into account. Obviously the tent will be made from a synthetic material, but you should also consider the quality of the material that you will purchase. The stronger the nylon used for the tent, the more likely it will be to put up with the abuse of a number of people going in and out of a tent on a camping trip.
  • If you are driving to your destination, you will find that any camping tent will suffice. However, hiking to your camping place will mean that your tent will need to be lightweight, as carrying around a heavy tent is exhausting. Consider whether you will be hiking, backpacking, walking, or simply driving to your camping spot, as that can help you purchase a tent that will be the right weight.

These three things are the most important things to consider, and you will find that there are many brands of outdoor camping tents that will meet your expectations and be excellent quality. As long as you consider these things, you will find that your outdoor camping tents will be comfortable when you are on a long camping trip.?

Egypt video shows torture of detainees

(AP) ? Egypt's military prosecutor said Wednesday it has opened an inquiry into a video showing a dozen Egyptian police and military officers beating and giving electric shocks to two detainees while laughing and filming the torture with their cell phones.

The video circulating on social networking sites shows the two men, one in a gray Egyptian robe and the second in a green shirt, being beaten repeatedly while they are questioned about the source of guns and rifles seized from them in the northern Nile Delta province of Dakahliya. When they refused to answer, the detainees are repeatedly given electric shocks on their ears and chins.

The footage was a reminder of much-hated police practices under ousted President Hosni Mubarak's rule that served as one of the motivating forces behind the popular uprising that toppled Mubarak's regime in February.

"This is a crime," said Malik Adly, a lawyer and activist at the Hisham Mubarak Law Center. "The presence of military police inside a civilian police station, and beating up detainees to force them to confess, is kidnapping."

A security official said that the two men were arrested and sentenced to up to 15-year in prison for arms trafficking. The official spoke on condition of anonymity.

Egypt's MENA state news agency said the military prosecutor has opened an inquiry.

Adly said that his center will file a lawsuit to the public prosecutor since military investigations are highly secretive and rights lawyers have never had access to the files of the cases.

"The mentality of the police and the military has not changed," he said. "This is no surprise to us because it is happening everyday, to every detainee."

"Imagine these people are responsible for your security and they behave like animals," he said.

Also Wednesday, Egypt's powerful former information minister was convicted of corruption and sentenced to seven years in prison, in the latest conviction of a high-ranking figure of Mubarak's regime.

Anas el-Fiqqi joins a growing list of former regime officials to have been convicted of crimes committed during Mubarak's rule, along with the ex-interior minister, tourism minister and a ruling party insider and steel magnate. Former state television chief Osama el-Sheikh also was sentenced Wednesday to five years in prison in the same case as el-Fiqqi.

Meting out justice to former regime officials has been a driving force behind continued protests and activists have accused the country's military rulers of dragging their heels in the prosecution of former Mubarak cronies.

El-Fiqqi was acquitted earlier this year of other charges, including channeling state money to help Mubarak's party election campaigns.

After the Cairo court announced its verdict, the families and supporters of the defendants broke out in chants, scuffled with one another and directed slurs at the judges. "Invalid, Invalid," the crowd chanted.

Disclaimer: My favorite news source is The Financial Times, which is owned by Pearson (NYSE: PSO - News), the subject of this article. Having confessed my potential conflict of interest, I can now, with clear conscience, set about telling you why Pearson is a publishing company that's keeping up with the digital age, and a company worth keeping your eye on.

Tom Clancy approved
Pearson is an international media and education powerhouse and publishes in the education, business, and consumer markets. If you've ever read Tom Clancy, Nora Roberts, John Steinbeck, or a host of other well-known authors, you've read a Penguin book. Penguin is a Pearson holding.

But 68% of Pearson's sales come from the education side of the business, and the company's revenue in that space is the highest in its peer group, a space that includes industry stalwarts McGraw-Hill (NYSE: MHP - News) and Apollo Group (Nasdaq: APOL - News).

Not your father's publishing company
Second-half results for 2011 paint a growing and profitable picture for Pearson:

  • Total sales are up a healthy 6%.
  • Total profits were up a more-than-healthy 20%.
  • FT Group sales, which operates Pearson's business publications, are up 7%, with profits up 10%.

Penguin's sales are 4% lower, but profits have stayed steady because of rapid digital growth. Dame Marjorie Scardino, Pearson's chief executive, recently told The Financial Times that the company was "well placed to exploit accelerating structural changes in its industries, such as the move to digital delivery of content." Walking the digital talk:

  • Pearson's digital education platform and service registrations are up 15%.
  • FT.com subscriptions are up more than 30%, which is extra impressive considering there's a pay wall.
  • Penguin e-book revenue is up almost 130%.

And developing markets -- including Africa, Middle East, Asia, and Latin America -- are another bright spot for Pearson, with total sales for all areas up 40%.

There's nothing to fear but un-Foolish fears
Pearson is currently trading for slightly less than $18, with a very attractive P/E of just 7.3. Peer Scholastic (Nasdaq: SCHL - News) has a P/E right now of 23. John Wiley & Sons' (NYSE: JW-A - News) is 15.

Investors have steered clear of traditional publishing companies lately, fearing they weren't making the necessary adjustments to stay competitive in the digital age. Pearson is not one of these companies. It's forward-thinking, forward-moving, and worthy of closer look by the investment community.

Slive: BCS 2-team conference limit reconsidered

The Bowl Championship Series' two-team per conference limit could be up for discussion as the BCS nears another round of television negotiations.

Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive was asked during a teleconference Tuesday about the possibility of the BCS changing its rules to allow more than two teams from a conference to play in the five most lucrative bowl games in a year.

He didn't say if he would support a change, but did indicate that it might be considered by the conference commissioners.

"I do know this: That Bill Hancock has put together a list of issues that he believes the commissioners and the BCS bowl oversight committee ought to be looking at as the BCS develops a position on upcoming negotiations. I think that's one of them," he said.

"I think there are going to be several issues that are important enough to have serious discussion about, and that would be one of them."

Slive and Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin were answering questions about the Aggies' move to the SEC.

In an email to The Associated Press, Hancock declined to discuss Slive's comments or elaborate on what other possible changes to the BCS he'd like to see the commissioners address.

"The commissioners are committed to making the BCS the best it can be," Hancock wrote. "It's very good now. Just what 'making it the best' might entail will be evaluated in a thoughtful and deliberate process over the next six or eight months."

A BCS bid is worth about $17 million to an automatic qualifying conference. The limit was first set when the BCS was implemented in 1999 and there were only four games ? the Rose, Sugar, Fiesta and Orange bowls.

The BCS championship game was added for the 2006 season, bumping the total number of games to five and bids to 10.

Removing the two-team cap from the BCS selection process would likely be a boon for the SEC and the Big Ten.

Since the BCS was implemented in 1999, the Big Ten has received two BCS bids in a season 10 times. The SEC has gotten two BCS bids eight times. The Big 12 has received two BCS five times and the Pac-10 (now Pac-12) three times.

The Big East and Atlantic Coast Conference have never received two BCS bids in a season.

The Big Ten has grown to 12 teams, adding Nebraska this season. The SEC will have at least 13 teams starting next season with the addition of Texas A&M.

A lesbian actress who starred in "The L-Word" said she kissed a girl ? and got escorted off of a Southwest Airlines flight on Monday for doing it.

Leisha Hailey took to Twitter to call for a boycott of the carrier after a flight attendant told them other passengers had complained after witnessing the affection.

Her first tweet said: "I have been discriminated against." She later added, "Since when is showing affection to someone you love illegal?"

Southwest Airlines Co. responded on its website that Hailey was approached "based solely on behavior and not gender." The airline's four-sentence response said passengers were characterizing the behavior as excessive.

A discussion followed on the flight, and the airline said it "escalated to a level that was better resolved on the ground."

Hailey was a musician before joining the cast of the Showtime drama featuring the lives of lesbian friends and lovers living in Los Angeles. She played the character Alice Pieszecki.

The actress and her unidentified girlfriend were on a flight from Baltimore to St. Louis. The kissing occurred in the air and a discussion followed when the plane landed.

Hailey said the encounter between the couple and a flight attendant was recorded.

A message seeking comment from Halley's spokeswoman, Libby Coffey, was not immediately returned.

Southwest's website says it is the official airline of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

Herndon Graddick, senior director of programs at GLAAD, said in an email that "GLAAD contacted Southwest to call for additional actions beyond tonight's statement that ensure all customers feel comfortable and welcomed while traveling."

Earlier this month, the Dallas-based airline kicked off Green Day's lead man Billie Joe Armstrong for wearing his pants too low. The Grammy winner was escorted off a plane after failing to follow a flight attendant's directive to pull the pants up.

Southwest also removed director Kevin Smith from a flight last year because he didn't fit properly in a single seat. His first tweet read, "Dear (at)SouthwestAir I know I'm fat, but was (the) captain (...) really justified in throwing me off a flight for which I was already seated?"

Halley is preparing to launch a 21-city tour to promote breast cancer awareness.

Clark's descendants replace stolen tribal canoe

It was a long time coming, but the descendants of explorer William Clark have tried to make amends for a 205-year-old theft.

A descendant of the explorer in the Corps of Discovery expedition that opened a land route to the West presented the Chinook Indian Nation with a replica of a canoe that the corps stole in 1806.

Some of Clark's descendants and a few donors stepped forward to pay for the canoe, which was custom built in Veneta, Ore.

The five-hour ceremony on Saturday included songs, gift exchanges and the maiden voyage of the replica canoe.

Ray Gardner, chairman of the Chinook Nation's tribal council, said the return of the canoe is a "good place to begin healing."

"It's nice to see a circle completed," Gardner said.

Major insult
After completing their journey west and spending a wet and wretched winter at the mouth of the Columbia River in 1806, Clark and Meriwether Lewis found they were short a canoe, so they stole one from the Clatsop Indians who had kept them alive all winter.

The Clatsop later became one of five tribes to form the Chinook Indian Nation.

It has long been a sore subject with the tribes in the Pacific Northwest, who perceived the theft as a major insult.

Canoes were a sacred part of their culture and an important mode of transportation.

The Chinook Indian Nation is not formally recognized by the U.S. government.

Federal recognition would make the tribe eligible for economic assistance, land, housing grants and other government benefits.

"I cannot help but think, if one family can step forward and right a wrong that has been committed against the Chinook nation 205 years later," Gardner said, "it would be nice if the federal government would do the same."

Clark's descendant, Lotsie Clark Holton, said she was overwhelmed by the acceptance of her family by Chinook tribe members.

Holton learned of the theft while working at a Washington, D.C., nonprofit with Gardner, setting Saturday's events in motion.

"It's been a wonderful experience. The Chinook people totally accepted us," Holton said. "After 205 years, it was certainly overdue."

Do UV Nail Dryers Pose a Skin Cancer Risk? - Health News - ABC ...

Creatas/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- After getting a manicure at a nail salon, many people in a rush opt to use an ultraviolet nail dryer -- a shortcut that exposes hands to the same skin-damaging UV rays emitted by the sun and tanning beds.? Although the intensity is much less than that of a tanning bed, some experts say enough exposure over time could increase the risk of skin cancer.

"Ultraviolet exposure is cumulative," said Dr. Darrell Rigel, clinical professor of dermatology at NYU Langone Medical Center.? "Like a meter in a taxicab, it only goes forward.? And the faster you go, the faster the meter goes."

Chronic, low-level UV exposure can cause basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma -- the most common forms of skin cancer often seen in people who spend a lot of time outside.? When spotted early, the cancers are easy to treat, unlike melanoma -- a rare skin cancer caused by acute high-level UV exposure, also known as sunburn.

"You could keep you hands in a UV nail dryer for an hour and not get a sunburn," said Rigel.? "But it's still UV exposure, and you want to minimize that as much as you can."

A 2009 report published in Archives of Dermatology detailed two cases of non-melanoma skin cancer on the hands of women who frequented the nail salon -- a 55-year-old with a 15-year history of twice-monthly appointments and a 48-year-old who went eight times in one year several years before her diagnosis.? Both women had cancer on the backs of their fingers, leading the report authors to suspect UV nail lamps as a possible trigger.

UV nail dryers are most often used to "cure" gel nails, but they're also used to harden some acrylic nails and traditional polishes.? A standard dryer has four nine-watt bulbs emitting a small fraction of the skin damaging UV rays of a 60 200-watt bulb tanning bed.? But for nail salon regulars or people who have UV dryers at home, the exposure can add up.

"?We know that UV light increases your risk of cancer (and wrinkles), and if you're going to the nail salon every two weeks (or weekly), that will add up to significant exposure," Dr. Roshini Raj, assistant professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center, wrote in her book, What the Yuck?! The Freaky and Fabulous Truth About Your Body.? "My two cents?? Use them sparingly, or, better yet, let your nails dry on their own.? It may take a bit longer, but it's worth the effort to save your skin."

Remains of satellite may never be found, NASA says (Reuters)

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) ? A six-ton NASA science satellite crashed to Earth on Saturday, leaving a mystery about where a ton of space debris may have landed.

The U.S. space agency said it believes the debris ended up in the Pacific Ocean, but the precise time of the bus-sized satellite's re-entry and the location of its debris field have not been determined.

The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, or UARS, ended 20 years in orbit with a suicidal plunge into the atmosphere sometime between 11:23 p.m. on Friday and 1:09 a.m. EDT on Saturday (0323 to 0509 GMT Saturday), NASA said.

The satellite would have been torn apart during the fiery re-entry, but about 26 pieces, the largest of which was estimated to have weighed 330 pounds (150 kg), likely survived the fall, officials said.

As it fell to Earth, UARS passed from the east coast of Africa over the Indian Ocean, then the Pacific Ocean, across northern Canada and the northern Atlantic Ocean to a point over West Africa. Most of the transit was over water, with some flight over northern Canada and West Africa, NASA said.

"Because we don't know where the re-entry point actually was, we don't know where the debris field might be," said Nicholas Johnson, chief orbital debris scientist at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. "We may never know."

Stretching 35 feet long and 15 feet in diameter, UARS was among the largest spacecraft to plummet uncontrollably through the atmosphere, although it is a slim cousin to NASA's 75-tonne (68,000 kilogram) Skylab station, which crashed to Earth in 1979.

Russia's last space station, the 135-tonne (122,000 kilogram) Mir, crashed into the Pacific Ocean in 2001, but it was a guided descent.

NASA now plans for the controlled re-entry of large spacecraft, but it did not when UARS was designed.

The 13,000-pound (5,897 kg) satellite was dispatched into orbit by a space shuttle crew in 1991 to study ozone and other chemicals in Earth's atmosphere.

It completed its mission in 2005 and has been slowly losing altitude ever since.

With most of the planet covered in water and vast uninhabited deserts and other land directly beneath the satellite's flight path, the chance that someone would be hit by falling debris was 1-in-3,200, NASA said.

"The risk to public safety is very remote," it said.

The satellite flew over most of the planet, traveling between 57 degrees north and 57 degrees south of the equator.

UARS was one of about 20,000 pieces of space debris in orbit around Earth. Something the size of UARS falls back into the atmosphere about once a year.

Fastpitch Softball ? Competitive Enjoyable in the Sun ...

Fastpitch softball is one of the most popular summer sports activities all around. This sport is typically played by females from ages five on up by means of higher education. It was a recognized summer season Olympic sport until it was taken out together with baseball following the 2008 Olympic Games. The United States won three gold medals and a single silver in the four Olympic Games that had softball. This sport has just as a number of tournaments as baseball, but countless are not as widely recognised exterior of the softball circuit.

This sport is extremely equivalent to gradual pitch softball, but with some major distinctions. The groups have on a uniform consisting of pants or shorts and staff softball shirts, and cleats, oftentimes developing athletic quotes on them for inspiration. Other products implemented is softball bats manufactured of metal or composite, softball gloves, and helmets. The teams typically have anywhere from fourteen to eighteen players. There are ten gamers on the area at any time in the positions pitcher, catcher, first foundation, 2nd base, shortstop, 3rd base, left discipline, left center, perfect center, and appropriate field.

The difference among fastpitch and gradual pitch besides the velocity and kind of pitch is that you can steal bases in fastpitch a whole lot as you can in baseball. The guidelines pertaining to steals are the similar as in baseball. The pitching style is commonly recognised as the ?windmill? primarily based on how the pitcher?s arm moves as she throws her pitch. Her throwing arm will make a total circle prior to she releases the ball. This kind of pitching provides momentum to the ball enabling a quite a bit speedier underhand release than in gradual pitch softball London. The measurement of the bat utilized in fastpitch is commonly noticeably shorter and lighter weight than the bat chosen in sluggish pitch because a player need to be in a position to whip the bat all around faster to hit the ball. Wooden bats are not permitted mainly because of injuries because of to them breaking. The recreation is made up of nine innings, but can be played a lot less due to time constraints or scoring.

Most metropolitan areas give summer season leagues for ladies intrigued in mastering to play softball. They can usually start off enjoying around the age of 6. Virtually all universities in the United States have softball groups and they compete in a Marketplace Collection. Softball is growing in attractiveness and the experienced circuit is growing to be a lot greater with a lot of additional teams. Health And Fitness | Tinnitus, Hearing Loss Or Simple Ringing? :: By ...

Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, is a very common condition among people of all ages. The severity of tinnitus varies between individuals. Some people may hear the sound very loud and almost constantly while others have only mild symptoms.

Tinnitus is not a disease. It is only a symptom of some other disorder in a human system. It is rather common that tinnitus comes along with hearing loss.

So, what are the most typical symptoms of tinnitus? Even though the condition is often called as ringing in the ears, it can also occur in several other types of sounds, such as buzzing, whooshing, and whistling. Just like the intense and frequency of tinnitus, also the type of sound is always individual, and it depends on the cause of the sound.

Tinnitus is caused by some disturbances in the ear origins or tissues and origins nearby the ear. These include cochlea, ear drum, inner ear, blood vessels, and the brain itself. If there are some disorders or disturbances in these tissues or origins, you may hear the sound in your ears which is called tinnitus.

There are some diseases that have been associated with tinnitus. Some of the most typical ones include ear infections, circulatory disorders, and changes in hormone levels.

Tinnitus has been associated with hearing loss in several instances. However, hearing loss and tinnitus are not always related. Also, among elderly people tinnitus has often been seen to be the first sign of age-induced hearing loss. That is why a hearing test might be wise when an individual at higher age is affected by tinnitus.

Often tinnitus begins after noise induced hearing loss, where consistent exposure to loud noises, such as with musicians or construction workers, injures the tiny cilia that pick up sounds in the ear. Exposure to loud noises is one of the most common tinnitus causes.

Still other forms of hearing related tinnitus occur when the brain is damaged due to powerful explosions or changes in air pressure. This is, unfortunately, a common concern for war veterans and is happening more and more now that soldiers are being exposed to considerable explosive devices in the form of IEDs.

Considering all the multiple ways tinnitus can occur in a person, it is even more shocking and perplexing that tinnitus can also occur for no reason in a person with otherwise healthy hearing. This ailment often shows no physical cause, but can still tremendously disrupt the life of one suffering with it.

Fatigue, anxiety, and issues with memory are common in these types of tinnitus sufferers, as it is extremely difficult to rest or concentrate when a constant ringing is being heard in the ears. Understanding that tinnitus can have no cause does, unfortunately, little to answer the question of whether your tinnitus is related to your hearing.

Just make sure whenever you order the invitations, you don?t put your private preferences before that of the brand new mom! Preserve her in mind to make this special occasion one she is going to treasure. Also you?ll want to double examine spelling! Have another person look the whole lot over before you click the cost button. Once you submit the orders, few companies will refund something if spelling errors had been your fault!

Do not forget the mom-to-be who is adopting a baby! Many adoptive moms can really feel left out once they don?t have the same ?rites-of-passages? as birth mothers do. Make her really feel additional special with a baby shower invitation that celebrates the uniqueness of being an adoptive mom. My favourite verse I?ve heard for adoption shower invites is that while the baby did not develop in her tummy, the baby grew in her coronary heart! How sweet is that?

Remember that the first impression company get of the baby shower is the invitation! Select wisely!
