"Skitching" - Skateboard Thrill Seeking with Unintended Results ...

Posted by: Salvatore J. Zambri, founding member and partner

??

Earlier this summer, a local teenager was killed while skitching, a skateboard stunt that involves riding a skateboard while holding on to the side of a car. His friend, the driver of the car, has been charged with reckless driving, with other more serious charges pending. Skateboard skitching continues to be popular among teens and is frequently the subject of video games and films, most notably the 1985 movie Back to the Future. What appears to be a thrilling and high-energy trick in the movies is actually a very dangerous practice, both for the skateboard rider as well as the driver of the vehicle. Helmets are rarely worn and accidents are frequent. It is also illegal to attempt to hold on to a vehicle while on a skateboard, bicycle, or roller blades. As with any sporting activity, use common sense to decide whether the dangers and risks outweigh the potential thrills. Please don't "skitch".

Africalegislation.com Goes Live To Help Payroll Authors In South Africa

  • By?Sam Wakoba
  • Monday, August 12th, 2013 at 2:46pm

Africa graphic dark smallSouth African Human Resource and payroll administration experts have today launched an information portal dedicated to help businesses across the continent with payroll and tax management.

Dubbed the Africa Employment Legislation Library, the portal is an international initiative that is focused on information share that will help users with challenges pertaining to the legal, practical and other considerations that form part of the payroll discipline.

It is hoped that the initiative will attract and secure the participation of recognised industry bodies like the Payroll Authors Group of South Africa (PAG).

Negotiations are underway with PAG to possibly offer the service to payroll vendors, which, as organisers of the portal explain, will help to ensure that everyone receives the same information and interpretation for development.

Initial funding for the development of the initiative was provided by Centric Holdings.

The key factor behind the establishment of the portal is to have in place a centralised location that will serve to facilitate information gathered from across the continent pertaining to payroll.

?

Legal specialists involved in setting up the Library acknowledge that this information is not always readily available and without an effective, reliable online channel, is often difficult to source.

?Our intention is to provide the user with relevant and up-to-date information. We source this data from different areas and the results of a thorough evaluation process. Documents are scrutinised, analysed and interpreted before it is incorporated into the offering. Revenue authorities and government portals are tracked for new publications and legislative updates,? explains Nicolette Nicholson, Head of Legislation.

?

In addition to the benefit of a single, reputable source of valuable information, the user also has peace of mind in knowing that what they are assimilating and applying has been ratified by seasoned legal professionals.

?This removes the burden of the user having to make sense of the maze of inaccurate or outdated interpretations within the employment market,? adds Nicholson.

?

The initiative is supported by the efforts of a dedicated team of researchers and staff who collectively ensure that the site is regularly updated.

Africa Employment Legislation Library is a membership-based initiative and offers all stakeholders in payroll the opportunity to join through either its Basic or Premium membership packages.

There are a host of services attached to each offer and payroll vendors can obtain additional membership to development requirement specifications, at an additional cost.

To date, the short-term objective of those behind the portal is to have 24 African countries fully documented by the end of 2013, with the longer-term aim of adding all 54 countries by 2016.

EDUCATION PROFILE: The Australian Institute of Music (AIM)

The Aus?tralian Insti?tute of Music (AIM) is delighted to announce that as of Jan?u?ary 2014 it will be open?ing its doors in Mel?bourne. AIM has been deliv?er?ing world-class music and cre?ative arts train?ing in Syd?ney since 1968. AIM is thrilled to announce its expan?sion into Mel?bourne and with a rep?u?ta?tion as one of the lead?ing schools for today?s music and cre?ative indus?tries, AIM Mel?bourne is excited to offer music stu?dents an inde?pen?dent, pro?fes?sional and unique ter?tiary edu?ca?tion, unlike any other. Known as the live music cap?i?tal of Aus?tralia, Mel?bourne is the ideal loca?tion for AIM?s new cam?pus. Its indus?try con?nec?tions attract the very best teach?ing staff, vis?it?ing artists and lec?tur?ers, with the most diverse range of music, enter?tain?ment and per?form?ing arts degrees, any?where in Australia.

Tell us about the loca?tion of the new Mel?bourne cam?pus.
AIM Mel?bourne is cen?trally located in the CBD at 120 King St, Mel?bourne. The cam?pus is one block from South?ern Cross Sta?tion and close to trams and Flinders St Station.

What courses will be offered at the Mel?bourne cam?pus?
AIM Mel?bourne will be offer?ing a Diploma and Degree courses in Con?tem?po?rary Per?for?mance, Com?po?si?tion & Music Pro?duc?tion and Enter?tain?ment Man?age?ment in Trimester 1, 2014, and will be intro?duc?ing all of the courses offered in Syd?ney from?2015.

Intro?duce us to the Con?tem?po?rary Per?for?mance Music course.
The Con?tem?po?rary Per?for?mance music course is highly prac?ti?cal and will give stu?dents thor?ough train?ing in all things con?tem?po?rary music, taught by some of the most tal?ented musi?cians in the coun?try. Stu?dents will learn to per?form with skill and con?fi?dence, with an under?stand?ing of musi?cal con?cepts and the abil?ity to adapt to almost any play?ing sit?u?a?tion on demand.

And the Com?po?si?tion & Music Pro?duc?tion course?
Com?po?si?tion & Music Pro?duc?tion at AIM ensures that stu?dents receive rel?e?vant indus?try prepa?ra?tion, in both com?po?si?tion and music pro?duc?tion for song?writ?ing, instru?men?tal music, elec?tronic music, and/or music for media. Indi?vid?ual skills com?bined with col?lab?o?ra?tive strate?gies pre?pare stu?dents for a life?long career in today?s music, enter?tain?ment and cre?ative arts industry.

The Bach?e?lor of Enter?tain?ment Man?age?ment sounds inter?est?ing.
Yeah, it?s a very holis?tic course in that cov?ers every?thing both a musi?cian and aspir?ing music indus?try or enter?tain?ment pro?fes?sional would need to suc?ceed in their cho?sen field. As AIM meets the demands of today?s fast-paced and ever-evolving enter?tain?ment indus?try, exam?in?ing both the artis?tic and the com?mer?cial sides of the busi?ness, as well as explor?ing the dynamic between the two is very impor?tant. The degree has a strong focus on the com?mer?cial music indus?try, but also con?sid?ers the not-for-profit sec?tor?too.

Are there oppor?tu?ni?ties for stu?dents to trans?fer between Syd?ney and Mel?bourne?
From 2015 stu?dents will have the oppor?tu?nity to trans?fer from the Syd?ney cam?pus to Mel?bourne, and vice?versa.

What can Mel?bourne stu?dents look for?ward to with the cam?pus and facil?i?ties?
The state of the art facil?i?ties that are avail?able to stu?dents in the Syd?ney cam?pus, will be reflected in Mel?bourne, with pur?pose built rehearsal spaces, music pro?duc?tion suites, indi?vid?ual pri?vate music les?son stu?dios, a brand new world class per?for?mance venue on cam?pus and music indus?try staff on hand, stu?dents can develop the con?fi?dence and skills needed to pur?sue a suc?cess?ful life long career in the music indus?try and wider enter?tain?ment fields.

Will AIM stu?dents have the oppor?tu?nity to work hands on with Melbourne?s live music scene includ?ing the numer?ous venues and count?less artists?
Heads of Depart?ment and staff in Mel?bourne have won?der?ful indus?try con?tacts allow?ing for stu?dents to cre?ate strong and pro?fes?sional rela?tion?ships in the Mel?bourne music and enter?tain?ment indus?tries. AIM is con?stantly expand?ing and with that, the list of indus?try con?tacts is grow?ing expo?nen?tially. This can range from con?nec?tions with pro?lific live music venues as well as iconic and estab?lished Aus?tralian and Inter?na?tional artists. Stu?dents of AIM are given the tools to work in a pro?fes?sional capac?ity in these envi?ron?ments and have the oppor?tu?ni?ties to poten?tially use these con?tacts to expand and develop their careers.

Impor?tant AIM dates and infor?ma?tion evenings:
Appli?ca?tions are now open for Diploma and Music Degree courses start?ing in Mel?bourne, Jan?u?ary?2014.

Donovan Earns Fourth Career Hat Trick, Galaxy, FC Dallas Draw 3-3

?? FRISCO, Texas (AP)?? Landon Donovan?s fourth career MLS hat trick was not enough to give the Los Angeles Galaxy a victory.

Blas Perez scored his second goal in the 86th minute to lift FC Dallas into a 3-3 tie with the Galaxy on Sunday night.

Donovan scored twice within nine minutes to give Los Angeles a 3-2 lead in the 82nd minute, but Perez notched his team-leading eighth goal of the season four minutes later.

Dallas nearly won it in stoppage time when Jackson launched a 40-yard shot that went off the right post.

?I really feel like the ball was going in,? said Jackson through a translator. ?I was really confident I took a really good shot that I thought was going in.?

The draw lifted the Galaxy (10-9-4) into a fifth-place tie with Seattle in the Western Conference.

Dallas (8-6-9), which had its winless streak extended to 10 matches (0-4-6), remains one point behind.

?We felt good about ourselves but we got lazy, gave up a real easy, careless free kick and then they score a goal,? said Donovan whose hat trick was his first in an MLS game since 2008.

?At the end of the day, it?s good we fought back, but when you have the lead with five minutes to go, you should win the game.?

All three Dallas goals originated off set pieces (one from a corner kick and two via free kicks), marking a league-leading 10 such goals the Galaxy have allowed this season.

?It?s been the story of the whole year with our set pieces, where we fall asleep and they end up getting a goal,? Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez said.

?It?s just a matter of putting everything you have into that 15-30 second play. It just has to be better. Our fight has to be better, more than the guy we?re going up against and tonight it just wasn?t there.

The Galaxy also felt that Perez?s tying goal, and perhaps his first one, should have been called offside.

?Terrible officiating, no question about it,? LA coach Bruce Arena said.

?However, we were still in position to win the game. What more can you say? It?s a shame that we can?t get better officiating in these games. We?re the team that should have won this game. It?s a shame, it really is.?

Matt Hedges scored Dallas? other goal in the 15th minute, snapping a club-record goalless streak at 464 minutes, the seventh-longest drought in MLS history.

?It?s important that the goals were scored and that bad run is finished,? Dallas midfielder David Ferreira said through an interpreter.

?But at the same time, there is sadness and the feeling in the locker room is that this was a game that the team could have taken the three points. That didn?t happen, so the feeling is kind of mixed.?

Chris Seitz made five saves for FC Dallas in just his third appearance this season. He filled in for starter Raul Fernandez, who is with the Peru national team.

?It was an exciting game with two teams that played really hard,? Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman said.

?I thought it was a good performance on our part in regards to team energy, hard work, we battled for balls. When we were down, we continued to fight, showed a lot of character playing against a very good team. I just wish the wind would have blown that ball in when it hit the post. That was a great shot by Jackson.?

With Dallas ahead 2-1, Donovan received a short pass from Marcelo Sarvas and stepped into a right-footed shot from 18 yards that beat the diving Seitz just inside the right goal post in the 73rd minute.

Nine minutes later, a throw-in by Robbie Keane bounced to Donovan about 8 yards out and the U.S. national team star spun and drilled a right-footed shot past Dallas defender George John. The ball initially appeared to be going wide, but it curled just inside the far post and in.

Perez tied the score off a free kick by Michel from 25 yards. The ball sailed into the middle of the penalty area, where Gonzalez headed it out, but it went right to Perez, who fired a 15-yard shot that beat Galaxy goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini just inside the left post.

Perez snapped a 1-1 tie in the 48th minute on another play that was set up by a free kick from Michel, who had entered the match to start the second half. His looping free kick from 30 yards curled toward the left post, where Perez lunged with his left foot to re-direct it home.

Hedges scored his second goal of the season, and FC Dallas? first in six games, to give his side a 1-0 lead just 15 minutes in. Ferreira delivered a corner kick into the middle, where George John headed it down. The ball bounced past several players to Hedges, who headed it just inside the left post.

Donovan?s first of the game tied it during first-half stoppage time, when he got past Hedges to chase down a nice lead ball from Keane and head it over the charging Seitz.

Keane, L.A.?s leading scorer and captain, was back in the lineup after missing three league games with a hip flexor injury.

The good and the bad of Xbox Home Gold | Lazygamer .:: The ...

buttons

As you probably saw on Friday while we were celebrating Women?s Day by not working at all, Microsoft has made some changes to how Xbox Live works on the Xbox One. You?ll now now longer require multiple Xbox Live Gold accounts on one console just to play online; buy just one Xbox Live Gold subscription and anybody playing on your console will have access to most of Gold?s features.

"So how it works is, on your console, anybody else on the console, whether it?s a babysitter that?s come over or a friend or your family, can participate in all the experiences like they?re on Gold," Xbox chief product officer Marc Whitten told Polygon. "It?s with their gamertag so they?re not on your gamertag, you don?t even have to be there, they?re not messing up your gamerscore or your storage or your queues or anything like that. It?s their full account experience, but it really gets to take full advantage of many of the Gold features."

That?s actually pretty cool; right now I take advantage of Xbox Live?s now-discontinued Family Pack, which gives me 4 gold accounts for less than the price of two ? so my eldest kid and the wife can play online and enjoy Gold?s media features as well. On the Xbox One, I?ll actually be saving money ? so I can?t be too upset. It?s not all good though; Xbox Home Gold will only be available on the Xbox One; it won?t work that way on the Xbox 360 at all.

It gets a little worse. To ready their system for the change, my family pack accounts will at the end of this month be converted to fully-fledged, individual Xbox Live gold accounts. If I want to keep my family online on the 360 in future, I?ll have to shell out for 3 whole Gold accounts. We?re getting 3 months of Xbox Live credited to our accounts, which is a nice gesture ? but having to shell out thrice for something I?ve been getting. The change also unfortunately kills off the ability to monitor child accounts, and gift MS points ? so it?ll be harder, as a parent, to keep the kid?s gaming in check.

The change kicks in at the end of this month ? and it also heralds the end of Microsoft points forever. When the dash update goes live, MS Points will be replaced with your local currency.

Still, the good far outweighs the bad. I especially like that I can go over to a mate who doesn?t have Xbox Live Gold, and while I?m logged in with my account on his console, he?ll have access to almost all of Gold?s features ? along with my digital library of games..pretty much just like it is on the 360 right now.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama says he'll hold a news conference Friday afternoon at the White House.

Obama will answer reporters' questions in the midst of a terror alert that led the government to close nearly two dozen embassies and consulates in the Middle East and North Africa.

And just this week, Obama canceled a one-on-one summit next month in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin (POO'-tihn), in part because of Russia's decision to grant asylum to National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden.

The news conference scheduled for 3 p.m. EDT also comes a day before Obama leaves Washington for a nine-day vacation on Martha's Vineyard, Mass.

Obama made the announcement Thursday as he wrapped up an Oval Office meeting with the prime minister of Greece.

Exotic animals removed from Canada pet shop

TORONTO (AP) ? The manager of a Canadian zoo says officials are preparing to remove more than a dozen animals from an exotic pet store beneath the apartment where two boys were asphyxiated by a python while they slept.

Bruce Dougan, the manager of the Magnetic Hill Zoo in New Brunswick, said Thursday it could take two days to safely remove 16 animals that the shop didn't have permits for.

Dougan, who is helping in the removal, says there are four large alligators, six crocodiles and some tortoises, turtles and snakes.

He says most of the animals will be taken to an Ontario zoo.

Noah Barthe, 4, and his brother Connor, 6, were found dead Monday after the snake escaped from its enclosure. They were sleeping in the apartment of the pet store owner, a family friend.

Sony FCC filing indicates Chromecast-like streamer in the works

A Sony FCC filing for a new device - the NSZ-GU1 - reveals that the company is working on a Chromecast-like dongle. Does that spell doom for Google TV?

    sony_nsz_gu1

Despite Google?s assurances to the contrary, could we be living in a post- Google TV world, as evidenced Sony?s recent FCC filing for a Chromecast-like media streamer? Though the mysterious device follows the naming convention of the company?s Google TV boxes ? it?s model NSZ-GU1, and they?re NSZ-GT1 and NSZ-GS7, respectively ? it lacks HDMI pass-through, a hallmark of Google TV. ?Test diagrams indicate the GU1 is a stick, powered by an external AC adapter (or, presumably, capable A/V equipment), that plugs directly into an open HDMI port. It does come replete with an IR blaster and Bluetooth, but those features aren?t necessarily indicative of anything; IR probably helps toggle the power and inputs on television sets without HDMI-CEC, and Bluetooth could be used to stream audio to a speaker system.

    sony_nsz_gu1_test_config

What are we to make of Sony?s foray into the streaming dongle space? While almost certainly not a Google TV, the NSZ-GU1 could very well be the first third-party Chromecast. Google didn?t given any indication that Chromecast would be a program open to manufacturers, but it?s possible the search giant believes (probably rightly) opening technology like DIAL to as many manufacturers as possible could hasten developer adoption of the ?cast? platform. That?s a boon for Google TV, which will be updated to support Chromecast-compatible apps in the near future. Look, then, for a lot of cheap dongles to flood the market in the comings months, but don?t expect Google TV to go away anytime soon.
