Updated at 9:41 p.m. ET: An 8-year-old girl was critically wounded Wednesday in a shooting incident at an elementary school in Bremerton, Wash., authorities said. The school district said it appeared the shooting?was an accident.

Armin Jahr Elementary School in Bremerton, across the Puget Sound from Seattle, was just letting out for the day when the victim, a girl in the third grade, was shot at about 1:29 p.m. local time (4:29 p.m. ET), Bremerton police said. Bremerton, which houses a naval base, is an hour ferry ride from downtown Seattle.

Police said it was too early to speculate about the circumstances, but a spokeswoman for the school district told NBC station KING of Seattle that the shooting appeared to have been an accident.

The girl, identified as Amina Bowman, was flown to Harborview trauma center in Seattle with a gunshot wound, the hospital said. Hospital officials told King5 Wednesday evening that Amina had emerged from surgery but faces more surgery.

Although Amina is a minor, her identity was released after her grandmother named her in local media interviews. The woman, Cindy Kocer,?told KING that the family expects Amina to be OK but is asking the public for its prayers.?

Bremerton police Lt. Peter Fisher said the gun used in the shooting had been recovered and that a second student, believed to have been the shooter, was being held for questioning. The school district said that student is 9 years old and also in the third grade.

Cindy Kocer, Bowman's grandmother, told KING 5 that she was watching TV of the shooting just before learning her granddaughter was involved.

"She will pull through," Kocer said. ?"If I can make a plea to all my CFC (Couples for Christ) families, please pray for her. That's all I need. That's all we need."

Kerri Johnson, the mother of a fourth-grader at the school, which is named for a former district superintendent, told KING that her son heard the shot.

?He?s really scared, but he?s fine,? Johnson said.

The latest scorecard by the Brady Campaign, a national gun control advocacy group, Washington scored no points in the child safety category because the state does not require trigger locks for guns and lacks laws to prevent child access to firearms, the Associated Press reported.

"Washington state is a loosely regulated state when it comes to firearms," said Gregory Roberts, executive director of Washington Cease Fire, a Brady Campaign affiliate.

Chinese court orders vendor to halt iPad sales in trademark dispute ...

A Chinese court has ordered a local electronics vendor to stop selling the iPad, as part of an escalating trademark dispute that threatens to stop Apple from selling its iconic tablet in the country.

On Friday, a court in the Chinese city of Huizhou ruled that electronics retailer Sundan had to halt iPad sales at one of its stores, according to Ma Dongxiao, a lawyer for Chinese company Proview, which filed the legal action.

Proview, a display vendor that has filed for bankruptcy, claims to own the iPad trademark in mainland China and is demanding that Apple stop selling its tablet in the country. Proview's legal action against Sundan is just one of the many lawsuits and complaints the company has filed to get local authorities to take action against iPad sales.

A lawyer for Sundan said on Monday the company is still waiting for a copy of the court verdict, which should arrive within two days. The company is still discussing the matter, and plans to speak with Apple. No decision has been made on whether to halt iPad sales.

Apple could not be immediately reached for comment.

Proview has also filed for a customs ban with Chinese authorities to stop exports and imports of the iPad tablet.

On Friday, Proview representative Li Su said the company would drop all action against Apple if the U.S. tech giant paid $400 million for the trademark.

The Chinese company acquired the iPad trademark in 2001. But Apple claims to have bought it in 2009 through a company it had set up, called IP Application. Proview, however, argues Apple bought the trademark rights from a Proview Taiwan subsidiary, which never had permission to sell the trademark.

Last June, a Hong Kong court ruled in favor of Apple, ordering an injunction to prevent Proview from selling the iPad trademark to another company. But in December, Apple was dealt a legal blow when a court in Shenzhen, China rejected the company's claims to the iPad trademark. Apple is appealing the decision.

With some easy planning, and very little cooking times, thank goodness we don?t have to run to a restaurant to eat out every night. Can you imagine the food bill for the month? I don?t know how families do it. And for us, in this stage of life, we save most the eating out for ?date nights? for my husband and me. The kids do well making their own dinners anyway, and they like to be creative in the kitchen.

It?s true, as the times we?ve asked our kids to come, they say they?d rather make a nutritious meal at home! I never thought I?d hear those words, so I guess our hard work of ?controlling? what goes into each dish, and our teens listening, has paid off.

How to Avoid Eating Out:

1. In the morning, or even the prior weekend, think ahead to what dinner will be and either use the slow cooker, or take meat (or food items) out of the freezer.

2. Prep in advance. Choose a day where you can cook extra foods, or get meals ready for the week.

3. Make extra when you cook; try to get 2-3 meals out of one larger recipe. IE, cook two whole chickens, eat one for dinner, use the other and leftovers for chicken soup with pasta and enchiladas (adding rice and beans).

4. Take advantage of your freezer. Learn which foods freeze well and which don?t.

5. Always keep your pantry stocked. Keep a list in the pantry of food items/dishes to cook using pantry items. Show your kids!

When you save money, and you eat healthy (knowing what you?re putting in), it feels good to be good stewards of our finances and bodies, doesn?t it?

Flight attendant faces firing over parody

An American Airlines flight attendant may be fired for videos mocking bosses. KXAS reporter Scott Gordon has the story.

A longtime American Airlines flight attendant said the company threatened to fire him on Friday over parody videos poking fun at company executives that he posted to YouTube, NBCDFW.com reports.

"You know what? It gave everybody at American a laugh that we so needed," said Gailen David of Miami, who has worked for American for 24 years.

In one of the videos, "Aluminum Lady" ? a parody of the movie "Iron Lady," about former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher ?he dressed as a female executive and held a toy airplane.

"We can run each one of these aircraft with about three less flight attendants," he joked. "It looks like it's perfectly doable."

In another video, he posed as an actual American executive and mocked a recent letter that she wrote to employees.

"I thought, 'You know what? I'm going to dress up and get in front of a camera and read this letter how they really meant it,' " he said.

American declared bankruptcy in November and announced this month that it planned to cut 2,300 flight attendants.

David said his bosses demanded that he remove the videos and summoned him to a disciplinary meeting on Friday that he did not attend.

"I'm not taking them down because too many people are enjoying them right now," he said.

He said his supervisor told him he would be fired for insubordination if he didn't go to the meeting, but he had not received official word he had been terminated.

In a written statement, company spokesman Bruce Hicks said David's videos crossed a line.

"We expect our employees to treat one another with respect," he said. "While we recognize our employees' right to express their viewpoints, we have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to attacking or harassing other employees."

David said he has received an overwhelmingly positive response from co-workers.

"I have to do what I have to do," he said. "They may fire me for it, and that's going to be OK."

The American Association of Flight Attendants is supporting him.

"Anybody who can get us to smile under these circumstances, I applaud," said Laura Glading, union president. "American has completely overreacted. We support Gailen."

David said he figures he would lose his job in the airline's bankruptcy whether or not he posted the videos.

"We all have tried to deliver such great customer service," he said. "And in return, it feels like we keep getting kicked in the gut, so this was a time for me to do something to make us all laugh for a change and really say what needed to be said."

The Pharmaceutical industry feels patient engagement is a priority, but lacks presence in the social media world.? There?s a better way for Pharma to get their message heard, and it requires going beyond the medications and stepping outside the silo.

I?m not in Pharma, and I?m not a marketer, but I find it incredibly frustrating that Pharma lags behind in the social media world.? I had the opportunity to listen and to speak with Pharma industry thought leaders at the recent ePharma Summit in NYC.

The continual overall message throughout the summit was the magnitude of patient engagement.? The summit went beyond the ?pill? and advertising and focused on the critical role of patients, and the impact of social media; however Pharma (for the most part) is behind the curve when it comes to social media.

?How Digital is Transforming the Pharmaceutical Marketing Model?? an informative session presented by one of the Keynote speakers, Charlotte McKines, Global Vice President, Marketing Communications and Channel Strategies, Merck & Co.

?Digital is not just a channel; it really is a different way of doing our business and it really impacts everything from our strategies to our executions,? said McKines during her onstage presentation.? ?So why is digital important?? she asked.?? ?We all declared, all of us in this room that we want to go beyond the pill, as we bring products to market, we want to focus on health care solutions that really impact patient outcomes and again move beyond the pill and we can?t do that in isolation.?? ?We need to have a coordinated approach with payers, with customers, with consumers, with hospitals, with government, and digital is really the connecting point.? It?s the core enabler that allows us to connect with all of our stakeholders.?

So health care players in this marketplace are increasingly connected through digital,? she explained.

?Customers are increasingly looking for information using digital to get information so you see 86% of most of our customers, physicians use the web to gather information, but more importantly they use the non-pharmaceutical sites to get information about our products. They really don?t have a lot of trust and value right now in pharmaceutical sites.? So we really struggle in life sciences to really become a primary trusted source.? We have got to get there because finding the right place and being in the right destination for our customers really does give us the competitive advantage,? she explained.

?So whoever gets there first is really going to have a very strong competitive advantage,? she said adamantly.

McKines further explains that it?s important to connect with customers that are already there.

What are the keys to master this transformation? McKines says there are three ways to master this transformation:

1. Adjust the organizations mindset?align to change customer needs, improve sales force effectiveness, and abandon traditional approach.? Virtual is key, use Podcasts, Webcasts.? Use sales as only one channel.? Leverage all the different channels, and customize approach based on the needs of customers. Customers are getting younger, so we need to engage our generational align.? Spread among the channels and go where the customers are.
2. Embrace and leverage new technologies ? less push and more pull.? Develop right content at the right time and the right place so customers can pull the information when they are ready to do that.? Match the non-Pharma experience, especially for the Gen Y customers.? Personalize content and use analytics and maintain data, and maximize results.? Step outside Pharma and look at how other industries are engaging customers like Best Buy, eBay, PayPal and American Express.
3. Build new, better and stronger business models, given the backdrop of digital.

Social media brings collaboration.? Pharma has the opportunity to steer the conversation the best that they can.? Listen to customers to gain insights, and respond quickly and appropriately.? Increase customer engagement through social media.

Sage advice and sounds simple, so why is Pharma ignoring it?

In talking with some of the attendees, the universal simple answer is that Pharma is paralyzed by the lack of regulatory FDA guidelines.

Pure and simple, that seems to be the reason.

But, should it be?

The Pharma industry is smart and they understand the value of social media, but they want FDA guidance.

While the FDA guidelines remain in limbo, and not ready for implementation, (the FDA teased the industry with a draft- PDF), Responding to Unsolicited Requests for Off-Label Information About Prescription Drugs and Medical Devices. The Digital Health Coalition (DHC),? a nonprofit organization was created to serve as the collective public voice and national public forum for the discussion of the current and future issues relevant to digital and electronic marketing of healthcare products and services, developed their own guidelines for best practices.? Take a look at the seven ?Guiding Principles and Best Practices for Companies and Users.?

The DHC Social Guiding Principal Summit was led by Mark Bard and Joe Farris.? ?The world is changing and we need to put some guardrails in place,? said Bard, founder of DHC, during the presentation.

In a rapid-fire session, ?Utilize Social Media as a Part of a Fully Integrated Campaign,? presented by Spilios Asimakopoulos, Director of Marketing Technology COE, Janssen pharmaceuticals and Clement Chan, Director, Digital Marketing, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, they talked about Janssen?s Facebook presence, despite the absence of regulatory guidelines from the FDA.? Janssen engages online with patients in the psoriasis community and has 7,254 fans on Facebook.

However, I asked if there was a Twitter presence, and Chan replied that there?s no activity on Twitter because ?there?s not enough room to talk to patients.?

Here is where I beg to differ.? Twitter is a huge social media platform and those not engaging in it, are doing a disservice.

I don?t believe anyone at the summit would argue that patient engagement isn?t critical, content is king, transparency is a must, listening is required, authenticity is a given and responding in real-time is necessary.

While Janssen champions Facebook, Janssen is active with its Living Well with Psoriasis community and they have 24 hour monitoring on Facebook.? Another Pharma company, Shire, uses Facebook specifically as a brand platform where consumer engagement doesn?t? exist because they don?t allow comments.

During the session I questioned Joanne Curley, Director Regulatory Affairs, Advertising and Promotion, Shire, as to why Shire is using Facebook if they don?t allow for comments.? Facebook is a social media platform and if social media is truly about patient engagement and a two-way conversation, how is it that Shire doesn?t allow comments or interaction? Doesn?t that defeat the purpose of social media?

Listening, learning, engagement, two-way conversation, transparency, authentic sharing, is what social media is all about.

Thoughts from Peter Pitts, President, Center for Medicine in the Public Interest

• If you wouldn?t say it offline, don?t say it online
• Use your best judgment, a lot of people in Pharma find it frightening to use their own judgment, he said.
• Understand what you?re doing and bottom line, Pharma is split and not involved.

Bonin Bough, Senior Director of Digital and Social Media, PepsiCo, said to choose where you want to listen and respond to the conversation.? Bough explained that there?s not too much engagement going on when Gatorade chatter revolves around hangovers, but he said that conversations from moms and coaches are interesting to them and that?s where they spend their time and where the real-time two-way conversations occur.

Finally

I feel that companies that aren?t engaging with patients and consumers are missing out on significant dialogue that can promote and result in trust and harness the power of people for positive word-of-mouth marketing.

Social media is about collaboration, connection, communication and community.

Without a doubt, patient engagement is critical and social media cannot be ignored.? Pharma is paralyzed by fear and hesitant to dive into social media arena without FDA guidelines.

It?s time for Pharma to stop holding its breath waiting for FDA guidelines and step outside the silo and engage strongly with others.? Go where consumers are, listen and respond authentically.

One of the worst things any company can say is, ?We?ve never done it that way before.?? How can a company move forward without stepping outside the box or like Guy Kawasaki likes to say, ?Jump the curve??

Gather the smartest minds in social media, utilize the extraordinary resources that are available (list below) and just make it happen.

Don?t be afraid of trying something new.? If it fails, at least you tried and you offer an apology to your customers, consumers, patients, people, and individuals (whatever term you use) and more than likely they will forgive you and you can move forward.? At least you tried and along the way probably have gained consumer trust.

What people won?t forgive you for is trying to cover things up and like McKines said, customers really don?t have a lot of trust and value right now in pharmaceutical sites.?

Maybe it?s time the C-Suite looks beyond the typical and moves the status quo to exciting new heights.
