It's no secret that Ti West is one of our favorite filmmakers working today. If it were, our massive, four-part interview with him from last year would be a pretty poor way of hiding it. And if you haven't read that yet, well, hey, you should; it's a candid peak into the mind of one of the most consistent indie horror filmmakers out there.
The director of The House of The Devil and The Innkeepers isn't staying indie forever, of course. In fact, Variety just revealed a new film of his in the works that will unite him with Cabin Fever director Eli Roth, who told the outlet he wanted this to be West's "first mainstream movie, without sacrificing the quality and unflinching horror of the subject matter." As for what that subject matter is, we're being kept completely in the dark about that for now. What we do know is that it's called The Sacrament and that West will begin directing from his own script later this month in Georgia.
That timeline would definitely put The Sacrament ahead of two of the other films West has in the pipeline, the original sci-fi film The Side Effect and an adaptation of Ben H. Winters' novel Bedbugs. Hopefully the late September start means it might possibly be done in time for a SXSW 2013 premiere, though if West is known for any one thing, it's that he's not exactly one to rush things, so we'll just keep our fingers crossed on that front.
In the meantime, if you're a horror junkie in need of a West fix, you can catch one of his segments in the found-footage anthology V/H/S, currently on VOD everywhere. Or if you happen to be at the Toronto International Film Festival, you can also catch one of his segments in the mega-anthology The ABCs of Death, which just so happens to be on our Top 20 Most Anticipated list for the fest. The Roth-produced Aftershock also found its way onto that list, which we're going to take to mean we preordained this whole thing. You're welcome, horror fans.
